Twitter/X Video Download Has No Sound? Causes and Fixes

A silent download usually isn't a bug — it's one of a few specific, identifiable situations. Here's how to tell which one you're looking at.

It's a GIF, not a video

If the post you downloaded from looked like an animated GIF, silence is expected, not a problem. The original video was uploaded without sound

Plenty of videos on X are silent by design — time-lapses, text-overlay memes, muted screen recordings, or clips someone deliberately posted without audio. If you play the original post directly on X and it's also silent there, the download is correct. That's the fastest way to rule this out: check the source before assuming the download is broken.

The player, not the file, is the problem

A file that plays silently in one app can play fine in another. A few things worth checking before assuming the file itself is broken:

• Device volume and mute switches — obvious, but easy to overlook, especially on iPhone's physical side switch.
• The specific app you're using to preview it. Some default photo/gallery apps handle certain video codecs inconsistently. Try opening the same file in a dedicated video player (VLC is free and handles almost anything) to rule this out.
• Bluetooth audio routing. If your phone or computer is connected to a Bluetooth device that isn't actually playing audio, video can appear silent even though the file is fine.

The download didn't fully complete
