X Video Has No Sound? Fixes for iPhone, Android and Web
Part of the complete guide to downloading X/Twitter videos.
If a video on X is playing silently, the likeliest cause is the simplest one: X mutes videos in the feed by default. Tap the video, or the speaker icon with a line through it in the corner of the player, and the sound comes on. If that doesn't do it, work through the checks below, roughly in order of how often each one turns out to be the answer.
(This page is about videos that are silent while you're watching them on X. If a video you downloaded is silent, that has different causes: downloaded X video has no sound.)
1. Unmute the video itself
Scroll videos start muted. Tap the video to open it and look for the speaker icon in the player controls. If it has a line through it, tap it once.
2. Check your device, not the app
- Volume. Turn the media volume up, not just the ringer volume.
- iPhone ringer switch. Flip the physical side switch and see whether that changes anything. How the switch affects audio can vary between apps and iOS versions, so it's a cheap thing to rule out.
- Bluetooth. If your phone is connected to earbuds, a speaker or a car, the sound may be going there. Disconnect and try again.
- Browser tab (desktop). In Chrome and other browsers, a tab can be muted on its own. If the tab shows a crossed-out speaker, right-click it and choose Unmute site.
3. Check whether the video had sound to begin with
Clips are often posted silent on purpose: time-lapses, text-on-screen memes, screen recordings. Open the same post on another device, or in a browser instead of the app. Silent everywhere means the audio was never there.
4. Refresh the app
If other videos have sound but this one doesn't, or none of them do:
- Update the X app, then reopen the post.
- Force-close it. On Android, long-press the app icon, open app info and tap Force stop. On iPhone, open the app switcher and swipe the X card away.
- Android: open app info → Storage → Clear cache.
- iPhone: there's no cache-clearing button, so the usual fix is to delete and reinstall the app.
- Try the same post on x.com in a browser. If sound works there, the problem is the app, not the video.
5. Don't confuse this with autoplay
X has a separate setting for whether videos start playing by themselves: Settings and privacy → Accessibility, display, and languages → Data usage → Video autoplay. It controls playing, not sound. If it's set to "Never", videos wait for you to tap them, which can feel like a playback bug.
If you just need the audio
If the point is to hear what's being said, you can skip the player entirely. Paste the post link into SaveNowX and download the video, or use the Twitter/X to MP3 converter to get only the audio. Playing the file in a plain player like VLC also tells you quickly whether the sound exists.
The same limit applies as everywhere: SaveNowX can only save what the post actually contains. If a video was uploaded without audio, the file will be silent too.
