Can You Download Videos From Private or Protected X Accounts?

Part of the complete guide to downloading X/Twitter videos.

No. SaveNowX can't download videos from private or protected X accounts, and no downloader that works from a pasted link can. This isn't a bug or a missing feature. It follows from how those accounts work, and it's the same reason the tool works without asking for your password.

What "protected" means on X

When an account is protected, its posts are visible only to followers the account owner has approved. You can recognise one by the small padlock next to the username. Without approval, even a public-looking link to one of its posts shows you nothing.

Why a downloader can't get around it

SaveNowX works from the public page of a post. It looks up what anyone could see without signing in, finds the video attached to it, and gives you that file. For a protected account, that public page has no video to find, so there is nothing to download.

The only way to see a protected post is to be logged in as an approved follower. A downloader would need your login to do the same, and SaveNowX never asks for your X username or password. Be careful with any site that does ask, because that is a warning sign of an unsafe downloader.

"But I can watch it myself"

That's true, and it's the confusing part. You can watch the video because X knows you're an approved follower. A downloader can't borrow that. Being able to watch a video doesn't make its link public.

What you can do instead

  • Ask the poster. If you know the person, ask them to send you the file or to post it somewhere public. This is the cleanest route and keeps you on the right side of their privacy choice.
  • It's your own account. X lets you request an archive of your data (in Settings, under Your account, look for the download-an-archive option). It includes the media you've posted. The exact menu wording can change.
  • Check whether the post is really private. Open the post link in a private or incognito browser window. If it plays there without logging in, it's public and SaveNowX should work. If it doesn't, the account or post is restricted.

Things that look like "private" but aren't

  • A mistyped or incomplete link. A profile link or search page won't work. You need the link to a single post. See how to copy the link of an X post.
  • A deleted post. Once X removes it, no downloader has a copy.
  • A post with no video. Photos and text have nothing to download.

For every other cause, the troubleshooting guide goes through them one by one.

A note on the rules

Even where a tool could technically save something, you're still responsible for how you use it. Videos from protected accounts were shared with a limited audience on purpose. Passing them on is the kind of thing covered in is it legal to download X videos.

Key facts

  • SaveNowX works only on public posts. It doesn't log in and never asks for your password.
  • Protected accounts are marked with a padlock; their posts are visible only to approved followers.
  • Your options are to ask the poster, request your own data archive, or confirm whether the post is actually public.
